Education & Training

NISD offers training in Narrative Therapy practices under the event brand Narrative LIVE. Trainings can take various formats, including workshops, weekly Professional Development Group (PDG) meetings, semester-long certificate programs, or multi-day conferences. We find that learning together as a community of therapists, health professionals, faculty, supervisors and colleagues has provided for a rich experience that enhances both our personal and professional lives, and invigorates our clinical work.

Additionally, NISD participates in various community and campus events throughout the year. Working in collaboration with healthcare providers, non-profit agencies, educational institutions and other partners, we strive to support learning and collaboration in post-structural ideas and work towards reducing the barriers for people from all walks of life to access mental health services.

NISD is also an approved traineeship site of several graduate programs in Marriage & Family Therapy (MFT), including Alliant International University, Northwestern University, Pepperdine University, and University of San Diego. Each June we bring on several 2nd year MFT graduate students through our MFT Residency Program and mentor them in a year-long clinical traineeship which is required for their COAMFTE-approved Master’s degree. Many of our trainees stay on as Registered Associate MFTs (AMFTs) and complete their clinical training for California state licensure by the Board of Behavioral Sciences. If you are interested in a placement during your practicum, traineeship or associate experience, send a cover letter and resume to hr@nisdcounseling.org.

Some of our teaching faculty include (L-R): Ron Estes, Mona Klausing, Dr. Jan Ewing, Dr. Maggie Slaska
